An Auspicious Visitor

Mariam, Louise, and Yahoko

A True Story

Eight years ago, not long after WiseWays Herbals found its new, permanent home at Singing Brook Farm, a barred owl appeared one morning in the fork of a young ash tree. All day long it perched there keeping silent vigil, gazing intently with deep, dark eyes through the workroom windows. It watched as we stewed herbs, extracted flower and gem essences, made candles and mixed powders.

As evening fell, the owl ruffled its feathers, spread its wings and disappeared into the forested hills. But in the morning, there he was again--perched on the very same branch, awaiting our return.

For seven days the owl lent his austere, eerie presence to our efforts. Perhaps we worked a little faster, a little better, under his vigilant eye. Certainly we wondered at his purpose--what he was waiting for--what he expected to find.

On the seventh night, he left for good, and we wondered if he'd found his purpose.

In Native American tradition, the owl represents the souls of our ancestors. He is an astral messenger, the bearer of news from the spirit realm.

In eight years, much has changed at Singing Brook Farm. Our business has grown. Many animals have come here to live: cats, llamas, sheep and rabbits. There are rock-lined water gardens along the hillside, filled with fish and beautiful flowers. In coming years, we hope to move yet again, to a larger facility at Eagle Bay Sanctuary in upstate New York. It is another pivotal moment in the history of WiseWays.

Late this winter, the owl appeared again.

He sat in the fork of the very same ash tree, now grown to hardy maturity. For days he sat and watched us through the workroom windows, seeking assurance that we continued to do as we should. On the seventh day, he was satisfied, and disappeared into the woods.

When another eight years have passed, and times of change come upon us again, we will look for his return.
